Cardiff
Overview

Cardiff in the south of Wales covers approximately 54 square miles, with a population of around 495,000. There are several rivers in Cardiff, including the River Taff which flows through the city centre and into Cardiff Bay, and the River Ely which flows southeast from Tonyrefail through western Cardiff into the Bristol Channel.

As a business, Welsh Water has 6 wastewater treatment works, as well as 2276km of sewers and 1533km water pipes to serve this county.

Over the next five years, we will be focusing on investing for the future, continuing to improve resilience in our drinking water network as well as strengthening our efforts to protect and improve the local environment.

2020-2025

Every five years we prepare a regulatory business plan which is submitted to Ofwat as part of the Price Review process. The plans are based on customer views and cover our performance commitments, efficiency, investments, and bills. Below are some examples of the work carried out in your area during the previous investment period 2020-2025.

Investing to Build Resilience in Our Drinking Water Network in Central Cardiff

We have invested £7.8 million to upgrade the water pipes in Llanishen and the surrounding areas, replacing approximately 3.7km of pipework. This essential work will help to improve the drinking water network and keep water flowing.

Upgrading the Wastewater Network to Support Local Growth

As the local water and wastewater company, we have a legal obligation to support new housing developments whilst protecting the local environment and ensuring the services that we provide our existing customers are not impacted.

Working closely with the local authority, local developer and community, we have been carrying out work in Danescourt and Hailey Park to ensure the Cardiff wastewater network has the capacity to continue to serve the wider community as the development progresses. The work includes building a small pumping station in Hailey Park and making improvements to our waste network to ensure the additional wastewater is pumped safely to our Cardiff Waste Water Treatment Works.
